Credible Communication and Cooperation: Experimental Evidence from Multi-stage Games
نویسندگان
چکیده
It is well known that communication often serves as a facilitator for cooperation in static games. Yet, communication can serve entirely different purposes in dynamic settings as communication during the game may work as a means for renegotiation, potentially undermining the credibility of cooperative strategies. To explore this issue, this paper experimentally investigates cooperation and non-binding communication in a two-stage game. More specifically, two treatments are considered: one with only pre-play communication and one where subjects can also communicate intra-play between the stages of the game. The results highlight a nontrivial difference concerning the effects of pre-play communication between the two treatments. Pre-play communication only has a significant impact on cooperation when no intra-play communication is possible. The results suggest that the credibility of pre-play messages may depend crucially on future communication opportunities. JEL: C92; C72

Equilibrium cooperation in two-stage games: Experimental evidence
This paper reports results of an experiment designed to investigate the nature of cooperation and punishment. Subjects are matched in a series of two-person, two-stage games with a sequential equilibrium that supports first-stage cooperation with a credible threat of subsequent punishment. Participants sometimes used a consistent punish/reward strategy, and when they did, cooperation rates incr...
متن کاملThe Effect of Play Therapy on Psychological Adjustment, Effective Communication with Others and Individual Abilities of Preschool Children
Background & Aims: One of the most important skills in preschool is social skills. It is very important to learn social skills in childhood. By strengthening social skills in this period, we can s...
متن کاملSwitching Costs in Frequently Repeated Games
We demonstrate the surprising effect of two simple variations on the usual finitely repeated game model. In particular, we add a small cost of changing actions and consider the effect of increasing the frequency of repetitions within a fixed period of time. We illustrate the wide range of commitments this can make credible and the effects these have. Not surprisingly, switching costs can make i...
متن کاملEquilibrium Cooperation in Three-Person, Choice-of-Partner Games
The experiment involves three-person games in which one player can choose which of two others to "do business with." The ability of the chooser to switch away from a defecting partner in a subsequent stage constitutes a salient action that may be used to punish static, noncooperative play. In this manner, cooperative outcomes that are not Nash equilibria in stage games can be supported by nonco...
متن کاملA modified position value for communication situations and its fuzzification
Myerson treated various situations of cooperation in the field of cooperative games and proposed the communication structure. In this paper, we define and characterize an allocation rule in terms of the position value, called an average spanning tree solution, for communication situations by introducing a concept of cooperation relationship which says that two players are deemed to possess this...
